Gliding and Fam Flying (Tow Plane) are a fundamental part of the Air Cadet Program. This provides our cadets at 777 Squadron a first hand experience of what it is like to be a Pilot. Each cadet is required to attend at least one Gliding or Fam Flight a year (weather permitting). Please pay attention to the information below if you are planning on coming out to fly with us!

Gliding Operations

Cadets will get to have one flight in a glider with a Glider Pilot, and a possible flight in the Tow Plane. This opportunity allows for the cadet to learn the basics of how to fly a glider, safety procedures and to learn how to recover and launch gliders from the runway.

Gliding sessions are weather dependent, and cancellation can occur. Cadets will be notified by telephone and it will also be posted on our website red announcement bar. Please make sure to check before you leave your home before your session. Parents you are welcomed to stay and watch your cadets BUT:

  • You are at a Transport Canada Airport, so you must stay in the strictly defined waiting area. If you wander you are subject to legal action and the air cadet program will lose our Gliding locations.

  • If you choose to stay, you must stay for the duration of the gliding session, as they lock the gate once Flying begins.

Cadets please be aware of the following:

  • You must stay the duration of the gliding session, and cannot leave until it is complete.

  • Washrooms are porta potties.

  • Please bring a lawn chair, water or food. All garbage must leave the airfield with you.

  • Dress of the day is: Civilian clothing with runners, please dress for the weather. Bring a hat and sunscreen.

When you see this sign…STOP!!!! Until a Gliding Operations Officer escorts you onto the airfield. Parents must wait here during the gliding session if they stay.

Parents/drivers must not leave until the escort from the Gliding program arrives. It is imperative that the parents, drivers, Cadets, and escort Officers understand that they are not permitted on the airfield without a gliding escort. If the parents or drivers for the Cadets arrive late, they are required to call the Site Commander or the Squadron Escort Officer and request assistance. Parents or drivers are NOT to seek out assistance or direction on how to get on the airfield from any of the tenants at the airport.
